8 Finlay St. Amsterdam

Researched and donated by Nancy Robinson

After researching US Census records, Ellis Island records, this site and by process of elimination, I am reasonably certain that the couple standing on the porch are William John Minnis, b. 1879 & his wife, Anna Fowler, b. 1881, the daughter of George Fowler. Both Irish immigrants, William and Anna were married about 1902 in Amsterdam.

William (30) & Anna (28) were enumerated on the 1910 census as married 8 yrs and living at 8 Finlay St., Amsterdam with children, Samuel J. (6), Anna M. (5), William G. (1 ?/12). William's mother, Mary Minnis (45) and Anna's brother Joshua Fowler (25) were also enumerated with the family. According to Joshua's WWI draft registration, dated 15 Sept 1918, his father had returned to Ireland and was living in Tallyho, County Down.

Sometime after 1910, the Minnis family moved to Philadelphia where their daughter, Ethel, was born in 1917, but they were back in Amsterdam to stay by 1930. They are buried in Hagaman Mills Cemetery.

This photo appears to date in the early 1900's. By process of elimination, others living at this address in earlier or later times would have been too old to be this couple. There is a house still standing on Finlay Street that could be this one. However, the house numbers have been changed, so it is difficult to be sure if it is the same house. If anyone has corrections or information regarding the photo or the Minnis or Fowler families, please do not hesitate to contact me so I can make additions or corrections.
