Little John M. Playford was born 10 May 1889 to Phillip and Isabella Playford. His father, an Amsterdam stone mason, was the son of Phillip Playford b. England abt 1809, d. Amsterdam, 1873 & his wife, Eunice b. Schoharie, abt 1826.
The Playford family arrived in New York from England on the ship Hercules, 6 July 1827. Passengers listed as Henry Playford, age 51, Horatia Playford, age 51, Joseph Playford, age 19, Phillip Playford, age 17, Mary Playford, age 15, & Thomas Playford, age 13.
Johnny, who was blind, was one of eight Playford children born to Phillip & Isabella (known children: Arthur, Ada, Jay, Maggie, Carrie, Harry, & possibly Alice). As is often the case, when one gift is taken away another is given and as an adult, John made his living as a piano tuner while living with his parents. On 10 Aug 1921, he married Katherine M. Wolcott, daughter of Lester & Ida Wolcott of Sherman, Chautauqua Co., NY. Widowed by 1920, Isabella continued to live with John and Katherine until her death sometime after 1930. John M. Playford lived for many years at 13 Gardiner St., Amsterdam. I have been unable to find his date of death. Katherine died Feb 1971.
