LATE 19th CENTURY TEXTILE MANUFACTURERSAMSTERDAM, N.Y.![]() Chalmers & Blood Knitting Mills, Amsterdam, N.Y. Elsewhere in the Town of Amsterdam section we have articles about work and the economy in what was at one time one of the most important manufacturing cities in the northeastern U.S. Most of these clothing and carpet companies closed down years ago or changed ownership and name. During the peak decades they employed thousands of local and commuting workers from Montgomery and surrounding counties, particularly Fulton. If you had late 19th, early 20th century ancestors in Amsterdam, chances are you had a relative who worked at one of these factories. Interspersed with the directory are ads and old postcards.
