Abeling Family of Canajoharie
Montgomery county, NY

"Recently in my research I found that a distant cousin, Barbara Elizabeth Minch, married into the ABELING family. This lead me to do some research on her lineage through online sources and NYS census records in the hopes of eventually finding out more about her and her parents. Special Thanks goes to Todd and Brian ABELING for their interest in sharing their research and their family verbal history! See their website: ABELING STREET for lots of Abeling family info." - Lisa Slaski

Our Special Correspondence

Canajoharie, May 29 - In 1829, Charles Abeling and wife arrived at this place from Germany, and being pleased with the surroundings, settled down. They have resided here since and have had eleven children, ten boys and one girl, all of whom are living and prospering. Nine of the boys, the oldest being 47 years old, and the youngest 23 years of age, are residing here, the eldest being the leading cigar manufacturer of this section. The other boy is following a successful occupation in California. Three of the boys went through the late war and never received a [blemish?]. All of the children here are married and the number of grandchildren is very large Charles Abeling is now upwards of 72 years of age, while his wife is upwards of 70. Both are healthy, considering their years, and bid fair to be centennarians.

NOTE: "As stated above, please refer to Todd and Brian Abeling's website: ABELING STREET for lots of Abeling family info. Only information on Orlando and Andrew are included here, as those were the individuals that I was researching." - Lisa Slaski

1.9. Orlando ABELING was born Aug 1848 or '49 in Montgomery county, NY. He was a son of Charles and Sophia Abeling who were both born in Germany. Orlando had a twin brother, Andrew. It appears that at least the 1880 census confused Andrew and Orlando. Orlando was married about 1871 to Barbara Elisabeth MINCH who was born Jun 1852 in Prussia (though the 1900 census states 1851, earlier census records suggest a year date of 1852). She may have been born in Dens, Hesse, where some of the other Minch family members were born. Her parents were John and Christine HILLMES MINCH. Orlando died on 1 Nov 1908 and "Elizabeth" died on 19 Apr 1904. It's likely that all their children were born in the town of Canajoharie.

Census Records:
