DR. WILLIAM SANDERS OF MONTGOMERY COUNTY, NY AND LOUISVILLE, KY
William was an alumnus of Cornell University in Ithaca. I received from the University Library the following genealogical information which I have extracted from photocopies of alumni questionnaire forms that William filled out himself:
William was born in the "Town of Dingman," Montgomery Co., NY, 24 Jan 1871. His father, Ervin Jacob SANDERS, was born 1845, Minden, Montgomery Co., NY. His mother, Martha WALRATH, was born 1842, St. Johnsville, Montgomery Co., NY. William attended preparatory school at St. Johnsville Union School, St. Johnsville, NY.
His gg-grandfather, Henry SANDERS, was wounded at the Battle of Oriskany in the War of the Revolution. Jacob SANDERS, his son, served in the American Army at the Battle of Plattsburg, War of 1812-14.
William attended Cornell University from September 1892 to June 1896, taking the Arts & Law course, and received his A.B. degree in 1896. While at Cornell he was Chairman of the Senior Class Photograph Committee in 1896.
Between 1896 and 1904 he was a traveling salesman [of medicines, per descendants of Wm. - cjs], for (J.?) A. Davis Co., Phila, Pa.
He married Lillian Helena HAYES, 11 July 1900, Peoria, Illinois.
From 1901 to 1904 William was a medical student at the Kentucky School of Medicine, Louisville, KY, and graduated in June 1904 with the degree of M.D., from the Kentucky School of Medicine, Louisville, KY.
From 1904 on he was a physician, at 1609 Preston St., Louisville, KY. Further information says that since 1905 he was a Lecturer on Chemistry, Kentucky School of Medicine, and since 1906 a Lecturer on Practice of Medicine, Kentucky School of Medicine.
William died October 14, 1920 from cerebral meningitis, a complication following surgery for an infection under his eye. I have a photocopy of his obit, as well as additional details of his time as a student at Cornell.
Anyone who would like additional information, please email me. Dr. William SANDERS was my husband's grandfather and I am doing research on this Montgomery Co./Herkimer Co. family.
