CEMETERY BY WEST BOUNDARY
WALL BETWEEN CITY AND TOWN OF AMSTERDAM in rear of first house in town |
---|
GILBERT, George Washington | son of Col. Eliet (sp) & Mrs. Harriet, of Greenfield, Mass., who died in this town, 10-25-1821, ae 25 yrs |
Six or more graves, no markers | |
(Note: this reading was taken over 70 years ago. It's unlikely that the given location description would hold up today as building development spread out from the city. This cemetery would have been in the occupant's back yard.) |

AMSTERDAM disclosed this stone |
---|
AYRES, Electra | d. 4/1/1819 | ae 21 yr 5 mo 5 da | wife of Daniel, M.D.; dau. of John Lamb |
Lethbridge did not state (1920s) when this stone was found. It's presence in town suggests that a sizeable early cemetery in the city of Amsterdam was built over and lost to development prior to the 1920s. |

"Just got back from a trip to the Mohawk Valley where I made some visits to some family sites. I finally discovered the location of the William Kline Cemetery referred to at http://www.rootsweb.com/%7Enymontgo/amsterdam/williamkline.html and http://www.rootsweb.com/~nyherkim/cemeteries/amstercem.html. The large boulder referred to in the William Kline story is located just inside the 3rd hole dogleg at Antlers Country Club. The best way to access it, so that one does not interfere with golfers, and because it's much easier, is from the east end of Country Club Lane. From the circle, walk about 100 yards east along the north side of the woods and you'll find it. The GPS lat/lon is 42.95847ºN and 74.25904ºW. As you can see from this photo, the plaque is gone. I'm also including a picture of the boulder from the 1941 article by Roscoe L. Whitman."
[Coordinator's note: the link to the picture of the boulder as it looked in 1941 is to an Adobe Acrobat .pdf file. You need to have the program Adobe Acrobat Reader installed on your computer to view it.]
"As noted in the William Kline story, the cemetery was plowed under. The 1941 author Roscoe L. Whitman was shown the location in the 1930s. The large boulder and plaque were placed to identify the location."

As you can tell from Whitman's genealogy (link below), there are no longer any stones to find. Instead a
Kline Memorial is located in the Old Family
Burying Ground east of Antlers Country Club, Amsterdam, N.Y. The memorial was placed there in a
ceremony November 5, 1936 and described at
http://www.rootsweb.com/~nymontgo/amsterdam/williamkline.html.
I'm not sure of the exact location of this memorial, but on my next trip to Rome in August, I hope to visit
it. As a side, recall Whitman
(refer to above article) states William Kline's first child Martha and her husband Francis Rogers witnessed
his will. Also, in Whitman's family tree under Martha Kline it is stated "m-Francis Rogers. They were witnesses to her father's will,
signing with their marks. No more has been learned of them and nothing of their descendants, if any." Well, not only am I here to
tell you Francis and Martha Rogers had descendants, I am one of them! And not only that, but the Oneida County website has
a link connecting to my web page describing their grave site. You can find my report on my visit to the Rogers Cemetery in Western, New
York, at http://home.kc.rr.com/themays73/rogers.htm.

From: Jack May
On a recent visit to New York I went looking for the cemetery labeled, "CEMETERY ON GROUNDS OF SUMMER
HOUSE OF CLARENCE STEWART ADJOINING THE
ANTLERS COUNTRY CLUB- Tribes Hill", but couldn't find it. Some guys in the country club playing cards
thought they knew where it was, but
couldn't direct me well enough to find the stones. They said it was 'near the condos', but it got dark. I am a
direct descendant of William
and Mariah Kline mentioned in the table.
I did find the stones labeled, "CEMETERY ON ANTLERS CLUB GROUNDS - near Tribes Hill". They were on the
road that runs through the golf
course near a utility pole. I think it was near the 16th tee.
Note: For detailed information about members of the Kline family, please refer to Jack's research about the "Kline Family of the Mohawk Valley", located on our site.

I was looking at the "Small Cemeteries, Town of Amsterdam, NY" page and I saw the "DE GRAFF's CEMETERY - at Degraff's Stop, F.
J. and G. Railroad - near Amsterdam" listing and believe it to be off Widow Susan Road. Two of the headstones can be read
clearly, that of Seth V. and George P. The other headstones are worn and broken. Hope that helps.
