Devendorf Cemetery
2011 Condition Report

Town of Florida

Montgomery County, NY

I have been doing some local cemetery work in the area and was contacted by a local resident concerned with the condition of the Devendorf-Pettingill Cemetery. Upon closer investigation I saw the reason for the concern. It is obvious this was once a beautiful little cemetery but it is has become severely overgrown with sumac trees and misc. brambles. Trees have fallen that need to be removed; it is as many others locally are, a mess. I am happy to report that most of the stones are still in great shape, but the sumac is slowly shifting them. There is a large downed tree on the fence but luckily the fence is still in great shape. There are many more people buried here than listed since the 1927 NY Genealogical and Biographical Record. The most recent was 1982. My proposition - I am within reasonable distance of this cemetery and am working on my own family cemetery in the area. I would be willing to get ahold of the land owner to get permission to head a clean up at the Devendorf Graveyard in the spring of 2012. Are there descendants that would like to and / or can participate in this and support this effort?

Feel free to contact me re: this matter.
