In the early 1920s this was the only stone left! The reader noted that there were at least 100 graves without headstones. Unfortunately, many cemeteries throughout the country have had stones taken over the years, often broken up for building fill. Because of this situation, and the fact that many graves were never marked with stone markers, the final resting places of most of our ancestors will never be located. If you've noticed an old cemetery in your area in need of preservation or TLC, please ask around to see if you can help. In some areas of the country local Boy Scout troops or school groups are helping to preserve what's left of this precious heritage. Many of the stones that have lasted are losing their inscriptions to the elements. If no one has ever read the tombstone inscriptions, perhaps you or someone you know would like to take on the project while the stones are still readable.
