The above cemetery list was submitted and digitally transcribed from a typed cemetery transcript by Skip Duett. A copy of the transcript is on file at the Montgomery Co. Dept.of History and Archives in Fonda, NY. Skip took the photo showing one of the Ehle monuments in the foreground in July 1996.

Skip tells us that:

"While the foreground is one of the Ehle monuments, it also gives the viewer some idea what the rest of the cemetery looks like and even has some maple trees in back from which the name derives. One humorous item about that monument - it is probably the nicest and most elaborate one in the cemetery, which surprised me until I found out that Alonzo Ehle (whose name appears on the other side) was the marble/monument dealer in Canajoharie! The front of the stone facing says 'Abram Ehle (son of Jacob) 1799-1897' and 'Esther (Reed), his wife, died Sept. 19, 1887, aged 84 yrs'. The monument was probably placed by Abram's son Alonzo W. Ehle."

Epilogue

"You may have noticed there are a number of EHLEs buried in Mapletown Cemetery. Here is some additional information about the EHLEs of Canajoharie. Additional references to the Ehle family can be found on the Town of Canajoharie page on this website."

"Hermanus EHLE was born in Germany about 1720 and came to America about 1745/1750. He and his wife, Elizabeth MILLER, settled south of Canajoharie near where the Mapletown Cemetery is located. Hermanus is believed to have died about 1768. They had at least nine children: Michael, William, Peter H., John, Magdalena, twins Anthony and Harmonus, Jacob and Anna (Nancy). All seven sons served in the militia during the Revolution. Peter H. (my 5th gr-grandfather) was a Capt. and served with Col. Van Schaick during the expedition against the Onondaga's in 1779. It is said that the twins Anthony and Harmonus would trade off on playing the fife and carrying the musket during forced marches. The family home was palisaded during the war and known as Fort Ehle. Jacob, only a teenager, was assigned garrison duty at home during his enlistment. Part of Jacob's duties involved beating the drum for call to muster in the morning and evening and other tasks to give the impression there were a large number of soldiers stationed there when often only Jacob, his mother, and sisters were present - early deception warfare! Jacob and his sister Nancy (wife of James KNOX) are both buried in Mapletown Cemetery as are many other descendants of Hermanus and Elizabeth. This Ehle family ties to many other early Mohawk Valley lines including Cornue, Dillenback, Dockstader, Gardinier, Gortner, Helmer, Jordan, Knox, Mabie, Moyer, Nellis, Priest, Quackenbush, Reas, Storms, Van Derwerken, Van Alstyne, Van Evera, Van Slyck, Vrooman, Walrath, Weiser, and Young. I would be happy to correspond with anyone on any of the Mohawk Valley Ehles and Allied Families. "

Hi,

I noticed that my grandparents' surname has been copied wrong on the Mapletown Cemetery listing which appears on the Herk/Mont gen website. My grandfather is listed as "Smith, Fay". In reality his name was Smith Fay, his mother having been a Smith and his father a Fay. His wife is entered correctly as "Collins Conrad Ella G." but indicated as wife of Fay Smith instead of Smith Fay. Her death date is 19 Apr 1949 if you should wish to enter that. It would really be good if you corrected this typo on the list.

Thanks in advance,
Jean Fay Hargrave
