SCOTCH CHURCH CEMETERY
Route 160
Midway Between Pattersonvile and Mariaville
Town of Florida
Montgomery County, NY
The Scotch Church Cemetery records were donated by Ray Anderson. The list was originally prepared by the Federal Writer's
Project of the Works Progress Administration, State of New York, in 1938. The WPA compilation built upon an earlier reading
taken by Melvin Lethbridge of Amsterdam, who
took readings of other Montgomery County cemeteries in the 1920s.
Copies of the listings were distributed by the Montgomery County Heritage & Genealogical Society at the 1997
dedication of an historical marker honoring the original settlers of the immediate area. The introduction states
that the cemetery is located on the property of the former Florida United Presbyterian Church. This church was
deactivated and sold in 1973 and the church building burned in 1987.
IMPORTANT PRELIMINARY NOTES
Later in 1938, the Rev. Robert D. Mahaffy, pastor of the Florida United Presbyterian Church, did further
research on the burial list and added additional information, which is bracketed, as well as the following notes:
"About 183 burials. Those marked 'X' I could not locate on Dec. 13, 1938 after checking all stones. List originally
made by Works Progress Adm. 119 State St., Albany, NY which copied inscriptions under direction of Marie Noll Cormack,
October 2, 1938. They also used incomplete list made by Melvin Lethbridge of Amsterdam in 1926"
The listings further state that:
First burial in cemetery was in 1802 and last burial in 1891. Over 60 were transferred to nearby Van Vechten
Cemetery after it became a public cemetery in 1883 and those transfer/reburials are listed on the last page,
based on records from Van Vechten Cemetery.

Our appreciation for donating an extremely helpful cemetery list goes to Ray Anderson. Ray tells us
that: "Scotch Church Cemetery is located about midway between Pattersonville and Mariaville on State Route 160. Neighbors
adjoining the Cemetery have a Pattersonville address (12137). Mariaville to the South is on Mariaville Lake. The site
of the former Church is marked by two State of NY historical marker signs which were dedicated 27 September, 1997. Scotch
Church should not be confused with Scotch Bush which is several miles away. The Church was deactivated in 1973 and burned
in 1987. The property is presently owned by an adjoining neighbor - information I received from another friendly neighbor!
Our interest in Scotch Church is the ROBB family - My wife's 3rd great grandfather, George Robb
b. 1761 and his wife Jeanette McMILLAN Robb are buried in this cemetery. We would welcome any
information you may have re any of the Robbs.
2/19/01 George Robb and Janet McMillan Baxter Robb are buried in the Scotch Church
Scotch Bush, Florida NY. Their children: Jane, Margaret, Alexander and James. I have additional information and would like
to contact others who are researching this family. Jeannine GabbyJJ@aol.com
For further information about persons buried in Scotch Church or Van Vechten Cemeteries, enquiries should be
made of the Montgomery Department of History and Archives. Info about
Scottish migration to Montgomery County or about Van Vechten Cemetery (burial list, caretaker's name, driving
instructions, etc.) would be greatly appreciated by the site coordinator for
posting on the site.
