The Dunlap Homestead In the 1850 census of Charleston, Robert Dunlap, age 57, a farmer born in New Jersey, resided with his wife Phebe age 45, son Ira age 19, son Birdsley age 14, daughter Mary age 11, and Silas Knapp, age 66. Birdsa is listed in the 1869-1870 Charleston directory as a farmer, p.o. Burtonsville, who leased 80 acres from Robert Dunlap. In 1870, he resided with his father Robert age 77, mother Phany age 66, wife Emily age 34, and sons Elmer age 8 and Delbert age 3. Their post office address was Charleston Four Corners. In the 1880 census Birdsee Dunlap, head of household and farmer age 43, resided with Emily age 44, son Elmer age 18, Delbert age 13, and his mother Phany age 76. Skipping forward 20 years to the 1900 census, Berdsa Dunlap, age 63 (b. Nov. 1836), married 39 years, and a farmer, resided in Charleston with his wife Emily age 64 (b. Feb. 1836). Emily stated that she'd had two children and both were living. Residing in their home was Elmer E., age 38 and single (b. Oct. 1861) and their hired man Willard Wiltsie age 42 (b. Feb. 1858) Residing close by was their son Delbert, age 33 (b. Nov. 1866) a farmer who'd been married 9 years, his wife Jennie age 31, and their only child Herman B. age 8 (b. Oct. 1891). In 1910, Birdsea Dunlap, age 73 and married 49 years, was still farming in Charleston. At home were his wife Emily 74, and their son Elmer E., age 48 and single. Delbert age 43, his wife Jennie age 41, and their son Herman B. age 15 were residing on Burr Street in Gloversville, Fulton County, NY, where Delbert was a laborer doing odd jobs.

My Grandfather Herman Dunlap, son of Delbert, was born and raised in Dell, New York. He lived most of his life in Johnstown and Gloversville, with some time in Fonda. I think he worked either at a tanning factory or a glove factory.
