The latest installment in our series of descendants of early Mohawk Valley families spotlights one line of the Conover family of Montgomery County. The photos and text were contributed by Marv Conover and his dad Seely Conover.

Conover Family Group Photo

At a family gathering on the Conover homestead near Fultonville, NY in the early 1920's. An annual family picnic was held at the home of Isaac Conover, the man on the far right.

From left to right: Kate Hunt (family friend), Rachel (Conover) Serviss, unknown, Alvira (Conover) Grandy , Avis Conover, Isaac Conover.

Isaac Conover is my great-grandfather Francis' brother. I guess that would make him my gg-uncle. Not sure. His father (my gg-grandfather) was Abram Conover. Abram's wife was Mary Horton. This summer my wife and I found where Abram and Mary are buried in Charleston Four Corners, Mont. Co. Isaac married Olivia VanValkenburg and they had one son named Emmett.

Rachel Service and Alvira Grandy are Isaac's and Francis' sisters, their maiden name being Conover. Avis is also a sister; she never married. Rachel married Harold Serviss; they had two daughters, Carrie and Edna. Alvira married Edgar Grandy; they had three sons, Harley, Seeber and Horton.

Conover Family PHoto

This family photo was taken probably in the mid 1890's. The girl in the back on the left is Lois Conover, daughter of Francis Conover and Emma L. Ryder Conover. Francis Conover is the man in the back. He is my great-grandfather. The boy in the second row, far right is Jacob Conover, son of Francis and Emma Conover. The boy in the middle is unknown. The boy on the far left of the second row is Frank Conover, my grandfather. He is also a son of Francis but a different mother than Lois and Jacob as Emma died at the age of 31. Frank's mother was Libbie T. Grandy. The little fellow in the front is William, son of Francis and Libbie. He died at the age of seven years.

Lois Conover married George Plantz. They had 3 children: Dorothy, Marguerite and Clyde. Frank Conover married Sadie J. Perrine. They had 3 sons, Seely (my dad), David and Paul. Sadie died in 1948 and Frank remarried Marion A. Marrow.

Francis Conover

This photo is of my great-grandfather, Francis Conover. Here he stands ready to perform his duties as custodian in an Amsterdam, NY schoolhouse. Probably taken around the turn of the century.
