Hello. My name is Fred Jones and my wife is Deborah Brace Jones. Able BRACE traveled from Litchfield County, Conn. in 1793 alone with his family. We live in the house that Henry built in 1861-1862 consisting of 20 plus rooms. The present farm consists of 420 acres. I really don't know what information you are looking for so I'll stop for now. Searching for the Daniel B. GRISWOLD, Daniel Jr. or II Griswold, and Daniel Jr. or III Griswold families. I know they were listed on the Herkimer County census for 1800,1810, and 1820. I know this is confusing but there were three different families. Daniel B. was the oldest, his son was named Daniel and his son was named Daniel, hence the reason for so many Jrs. and II and III. Trying to determine if any of them died in the county or if there are any birth records. I believe Daniel Jr. or III was married to a woman name Judea. I know they Daniel and Judea had at least one son born in Herkimer county in 1809 named Eli He married a woman named Elizabeth RAMSEY who may have been born in the same county around 1815. Sometimes they were listed in the Fairfield Twp. Any help will be appreciated. Probably any other Griswolds are somehow related and would be interested in anything on them to see where they can be placed. I do know that by the 1830 census most of the younger Daniels had moved to Cayuga County. Thanks!!! Jan Robinson Amarillo, Tx. Email: robinson@arn.net

My ggg-grandfather John R. L. BUTLER and wife appear in the 1830 Census for the Town of Salisbury, Herkimer Co. I have been unable to establish their parents or their place of birth. The more I read up on Herkimer county the more I wonder if he was of German decent. Our family has always claimed he was descended from the English Butlers descended from Alexander Butler but we and several other historians back in 1950 were unable to find him although they didn't even find him in the 1830 Census like I just recently did, so I don't think it is a lost cause yet! From the history of a trial that took place in 1950 for the heirs to Francis Louise Butler's estate we have come up with very little actual proof to go on. From those articles we have copied we suspect that he and Margaret Lucretia FOX (QUIMBEY) were married 23 May 1826 but that has not been proven. We also believe that Margaret was married to a ____Quimbey and had one son William by him. This son William later took the name of Butler. Margaret and John later went on to have eleven more children. The names of the other children are as follows:
Electa Ann is my ggrandmother and I can give more details at a later date. How would I go about finding more information on these possible births in Herkimer Co. and the other birth of unknown origin. I was hoping there would be some church listings for the area but there wasn't. Would a historian know? Any help you could give would be greatly appreciated as you can see this has been a brick wall in our research many years before my time of researching. One more note, we believe that John's date of birth was 20 Mar. 1804/06 maybe Green Co. and Margaret's was 23 May 1805 maybe in Schoharie Co. From 1850 thru 1870 Census listed as living in Town of Constantia, Oswego Co. I have an abstract of their land up there from the courthouse research I did up there last fall. Any information no matter how little would be great appreciated! Thank you for reading this long letter. Kathleen Teague, 313 Boston St., Oneida, NY 13421-1203
Note re this GenWeb site: what we have in our township listings is hit and miss as we are 100% dependent on contributions of material to this site. If you've picked up any sort of list in the course of your own family research that you've noticed isn't on this site - cemeteries, organizations, churches, bible pages, etc. - please let us know what you have at home and would be willing to share with other researchers to improve our site. If it's not typed up on your computer, volunteers are on our waiting list hoping a hard-copy typing assignment will turn up for their favorite township. Many online researchers and volunteers are giving their best efforts to make this site as useful (and entertaining) as possible; but there will always be gaps in our online resources, which cannot compare to the holdings of our local societies. Your contributions of items, small and large, encourage others to send in theirs, as ours is a group participation GenWeb site. Researchers are indeed finding their ancestors on the lists we do have, meeting other "cousins", making important contacts, finding out that they can order military records of elusive ancestors finally captured on our lists, etc. Recent mail and guestbook signings indicate that the efforts being put into this site by typing volunteers and contributors, and the growing momentum, are making Herkimer/Montgomery one of the best genealogical county sites in the U.S. and a site that today's county residents are proud of.
While I have your attention, :-) does anyone have ancestors in Wayne County NY as well? After about 1820 many young families from the Mohawk Valley, including one of my own, moved west into Central New York to join earlier Yankee settlers. The new Wayne County NYGenWeb has the distinction of being the first New York State county with three co-coordinators - myself, my friend and research buddy Mike Burnett who is coordinator of the Ontario County NYGenWeb, and Marge Lutzvick, an expert on the Sherman surname. Wayne is barely three weeks old now, a labor of love that we hope to see have the breadth of the Herkimer/Montgomery and Ontario County pages. Mike, Marge and I look forward to your visits, contributions and good wishes for a deserving county.

Searching for information on Jacob V. SHAFT. In 1836 he was living in Canastota when he married Margaret Jane PUTNAM (probably PUTMAN) of Canajoharie. Jacob V. is not listed as a head of household on any census until 1850 in Shiawassee County, Michigan. Pension records of two of his sons tell us Jacob V. and Margaret's first son (John) was born in Canastota, Madison County, New York in 1837. Next son, Charles, was born in 1840 in Herkimer County, New York. No towns in Herkimer County are known. From census records and pension records we can estimate Jacob V. Shaft was born in 1809 or 1810. Margaret Jane Putnam/Putman was born around 1820. Any information would be appreciated.
