School Commissioners

Prior to 1857, School Commissioners were appointed by the Boards of Supervisros. Since that year they have been elected on a separate ballot. The first election under the act creating the office (chapter 179, Laws of 1856) was held in November 1859. Term, three years.

By an act passed April 17, 1843, the Boards of Supervisors of the several counties were directed to appoint County Superintendents of Common Schools. The office was abolished March 13, 1847.
