Herkimer/Montgomery County Queries for July 1 - 19, 1998

Jack Hoke Sun 19 Jul 1998
The Quackenbush Memoranda Book Part II, mentions your site being interested in who the 'other' regular customers were. The name Elisha HOKE intrigues me - does he happen to have been a barber? Could he be the Elisha who turned up here in Toronto in 1871? The NY Hoke family came "up from the Delaware Country" before 1750, earliest known being John Frederick born abt.1750 Greenbush (Now Albany), Rensselaer Co. I have pretty near all members, but some are still dis-connected branches. Between 1800-1860 they were pretty heavy in Otsego Co. I subscribe to the Otsego List, and had hopes of finding someone else who could help with the missing links and complete the line - but no luck so far.

I suspect that Elisha was related to or one of the V. J. or V. I. Hoke brothers who ran a Barber Shop in Minden (if memory serves) around that time. Being from Ontario, the distances I see on the map seem too far for him to have visited Fort Plain almost daily from Minden, but there were Rufus (Paines Hollow), Nathan & Solomon (Stark), and Hiram (Van Hornesville), which look not too far away. Marine S. Damvelt Sun 19 Jul 1998
Seeking the parents of Maria SCHERMERHORN. Maria died in West Sparta, Livingston County, 28 Jul 1840. She had lived 31 years 6 months, which would make her birth date 28 Jan 1809. On her sons death certificate it indicated that she was born in the Town of Mohawk, Montgomery County. She was married to John KENNEDY, and they had 4 children, most likely all born in Oneida County. They are John b: 1824, James M. b: 1827, Polly b: 22 Sep 1829, and Andrew b: 1834.

On the 1840 US Census for Oneida County there is John Kennedy living in the Town of Boonville Number 275, and John Schermerhorn living in the same town with Number 274. This John Schermerhorn may be either the father or possible brother to Maria. I hope that someone could help identify the parents of Maria from the Town of Mohawk,. The US Census for 1810 for Montgomery County indicates several Schermehorns living in Montgomery County. A Evert Schermerhorn, Folkert Schermerhorn, John Schermerhorn, Marine S Damvelt. I am seeking original documentation of the building of Fort Klock in St. Johnsville. All sources state that the fortified home was built by Johannes KLOCK in 1750. The ELWOOD families across the United States state that Richard Elwood/Ellwood built the house, or at least, according to some, assisted in building the house. Secondary sources show that Richard purchased land in the Kings Rd. in what is now St. Johnsville, on the Harrison Patent - which is where the Klock house is located. Elwood decendants said that Richard Elwood's name is inscribed above the main door of the fortified home. I have visited the Fort and his name is not written over any of the doors.

Elwood descendants state that Richard Elwood came to the Mohawk Valley from England in 1748. There is an earlier Elwood - James - that was in what is now Montgomery Co., as early as 1739/40 when he and Mary Butler witnessed a baptism at Queen Ann's Chapel in Fort Hunter, in what is present Town of Florida. James and wife Mary (no surname) had a child baptised in this church in 1742. The William Johnson papers show a letter from Sir. William Johnson dated 1756 that James Elwood and ____ PUTMAN are to be compensated for the building of the Mohawk Fort. Is it possible that "Mohawk Fort" is Fort Klock? I cannot locate any other Fort in the Mohawk Valley in this time period. Deanna Vosburgh Smith Email: dee@borg.com

Sally Chirlin Wed 1 Jul 1998
In the early 1800's David McLAUGHLIN and wife Mary HOLMES moved into the town of Winfield from either Plainfield or Richfield. (1800 Otsego Co. census has William McGLATHLIN and Nathanial Holmes next to one another in town of Richfield, Otsego Co.) David and Mary and family are listed in Winfield, Herkimer Co. in each succeeding census through 1860. David and Mary both died after 1860. David is listed as b. Ireland and Mary Massachusetts in more than one census record. I have information giving William and Mary ? McLaughlin are parents of David. I am assuming the probability of Nathanial Holmes being the father of Mary.

Questions: What cemeteries are all these people buried in? Where in Ireland did the McLaughlins come from and when? (It has to be between 1781 and 1800 as David is listed as b. 1781.) Can anyone help me with WALLING ancestry? Stephen Walling married Olive McLaughlin in 1823 in Plainfield or Exeter township perhaps. Olive is daughter of David and Mary Holmes McLaughlin. Stephen is son of William and Carolin GORTON Walling. I have no other information about William and Caroline except that Stephen was reported to have been born in 1799 in RI.

I have lots of descendency information from both Walling and McLaughlin families for anyone interested. I need ancestry. Olive and Stephen Walling had a large family several of whom were born in Oswego Co., and last one b. in Herkimer Co. I am also seeking ancestry of Caroling Gorton as well as William Walling. I believe they are both descendants of early RI families. Sally Chirlin  Email:chirlin@norwich.net

I have a pedigree chart compiled by another researcher which lists the birth of Melchior BADER (BAUDER) about 1741 in Schoharie NY. Melchior married Barbara BAJER in Stone Arabia, NY on November 18, 1761. The chart also lists his death in Cahajoharie NY in about 1840. Does anyone have any information on Melchior BADER or the BADER, BAUDER and/or BAJER families that they would be willing to share? Ed Harrison  Email: EJHarrison@compuserve.com
