Peter Kelch1755-18--? My grandmother is Nellie TURNER, her father is Joseph Turner. Joseph's wife's maiden name was Ellen Kelch. I believe her father was Peter KELCH, who lived in Frankfort, N.Y. He was a member of the Second Company of The New York Line. He was taken prisoner by the French and Indians and was taken to Ottawa and survived 3 years of dungeon captivity. I believe he had four or five children. Do you know anything about him. Thank you. Don E. Gibbin, 1225 Martha Custis Dr., Alexandria, Va. 22302

Herkimer and Montgomery Counties certainly have a great website! I wish some of the others had as much info as yours does. I'm researching SMITH, SLOCUM and BOLT (for someone in the midwest). Primarily Saratoga County, but possible that some of them were a bit further west. Thanks, Rebecca Rector Troy, NY

I will be in Herkimer County August 22nd. In documentation I received from the National Archives I learned my great grandfather died on July 26, 1926 and was buried in the Columbia Center Cemetery. His name is Mott HAGGERTY aka Martin FLINT. Can someone supply me with directions to the cemetery coming from Waterville, Oneida County. I do not know which name he is buried under. Robert Benjamin Westminster, MD E-mail address is
(Note: Bob received a reply within a few hours of this posting from Kathleen McLaughlin, Nellis family researcher. "Columbia Center road (county highway 259) is in the center of the town of Columbia. Take 20 east to 51 north to 18 east to the juncture of 18 (Jordanville Rd runs e and w ) and 101 (McKoons Rd runs south) and 259 (Columbia Center Rd runs north). Take 259 north. Then ask a native how to get there. Wear long pants and sleeves, the cemetery may be full of poison ivy and overgrown. If it is on private property, seek permission to go onto the cemetery grounds. Take chalk with you to highlight the tombstone markings and maybe an ice pick to probe for a stone. Do not be too disappointed if there are no stones at all. Good luck. " Kathleen

HARTER: HARDER, HERRTHER, HERTER, HORTTER, etc. I am looking for documentation, other than the Kofmehl & Patrick publication, to prove my lineage to Lorentz HARTER and Lorence Harter ( I believe they are father and son).
I have approximately 100 pages from Lawrence Herder's (name spelling varies numerous times throughout these documents) Rev. War pension files, which I printed from microfilm. I believe these documents are addressing both individuals.
I believe my lineage goes like this:
Margaret Harter Thompson - my maternal grandmother
John H Harter - her father, my g grandfather
Andrew Harter - his father, my gg grandfather
Phillip Harter - his father, my ggg grandfather
Laurence Harter (varying spellings of both names - his father, my gggg grandfather
Lorentz Harter (varying spellings of both names - his father, my ggggg grandfather
Is there someone who can help me prove or disprove this? Can you suggest a direction to my goal? Thank you for your dedication to the web page...it is first class!Beverly Crowell Email: BevCrowell@aol.com

Looking for any/all information on Peter HESS married to Cordelia (?) and believed to be the son of Daniel Hess and Maria FOX originally of Herkimer. Peter is shown on the 1825 NYS census as residing in the Town of Hounsfield, Jefferson Co., NY with wife, 2 sons and 1 daughter. My g-grandfather, John P. Hess, was born the following year, 1826, but by the time of the 1830 federal census they were no longer residing at that location. As NYS census reports show only the name of the head of household and age groupings for all others, I have NO information on Peter, his wife, or his children - other than John P. My husband's grandfather, Jacob SCHMINKE lived in Cedarville during the Civil War and was married there to Katarina IBEL. Her brother's name was George Ibel. Jacob served in the Civil War, enlisting at Albany. They have a daughter buried in the cemetery in Cedarville. We have been unable to find any records of their marriage. We have visited Cedarville every Sept. for the last several years, but don't know where to look for marriage records. We will be there again this Sept. and would love to be able to find some record of any kind. We have seen census books with their names, but that is all. We do know that the Schminke child, a little girl, is buried on an Ibel plot. Jacob and Katarina; along with their children, moved to Iowa after Jacob mustered out of the war. They are buried in Atkins, Iowa. We would be grateful for any info. that anyone can pass on to us. Thank you in advance. Joan Schminke Email: WFSJMS@aol.com

Subject: Rood-Chapin Families Ref. above families: I have much on the ROOD Family. Much less on the particular CHAPIN family.
An Ezra Rood [5th.Gen.] left Mass1788; Durham;1795-Bristol, Schoharie Co.;1809-Plainfield;Winfield. Probably farmers, so the latter towns may reflect town/county changes rather than any migration. Ezra Rood, Jr., b.1802 in Bristol, m. on 30 Sep.1824 in, maybe, Winfield,Herkimer Co. a Demaris POTTER of Winfield at that time. Demaris was daughter of a Pardon Potter and a Rhoda CARVER. Pardon was a Lieut.in the War of 1812, I think. Reuben Rood, another son of the same Ezra ROOD [5th.Gen.], b. 16 Mar 1791 in Durham, Greene Co. m. an Anna CHAPIN c.1811 in the vicinity of Plainfield (or whatever the town was calle) by that time. Ezra end wife Demaris Potter soon migrated to Cortland Co. where they lived out their lives. Reuben Rood and wife Anna Chapin migrated to Broome Co.and remained for the rest of their lives. I am descended from both of these lines as second cousins married. Ezra Rood died on 28 Mar 1829 in the Plainfield/Winfield area. Again, probably, all the same farm place from 1809, subjected to the occuring political naming changes of those years. His wife was a Parthena WARNER, b.1768 in Ct. and.c.1864, probably in Homer, Cortland Co.N.Y. Would like info.or leads on Chapin families there at that time who had a daughter, Anna Chapin. Or,where in Herkimer or in Otsego Co. would have the best records fo those changling-years there, for those times. I have been to Cooperstown and was unsuccessful in reference to Anna. I would be happy to share info on the ROOD family .They are mentioned in one of the history books of that area simply as an early Rood family of settlers. Charlotte. Email: email@example.com
