Charles Hoff Mon Mar 31 1997
I am descended from a John HOFF and his wife Eva CORNU who were married in Glen. John is, I believe, a descendant of Richard Hoff, Sr. of Glen, Montgomery County, NY. Whereas I can document descent from other families in this region (e.g., Van EP(P)S, Van ANTWERP, CORNU, du TRIEUX, and many other of the old Dutch and Walloon settler families), I have had no luck with the Hoff connection beyond John. It is possible that he is a son or grandson of Richard, Sr. If anyone has information about John's parents or could put me in contact with other genealogical researchers focusing on the Hoff family, I would be most grateful. Best regards.

Hi. I had relatives who lived in Montgomery County for a period between about 1840 and 1925. The surname I'm searching for is LOUNSBERY, although it shows up on the 1855 Town of Root census as LONUSBURY and the 1860 Town of Root census as LONNSBURY. The 1905 Town of Root census shows the name with the LOUNSBERY spelling. I'm also looking for the surnames VAN VALKENBURGH, MARTIN, BEVINS and EDWARDS.
The specific individuals for whom I am searching are:
b. 1780 Kingston, Ulster Co, NY
d. 1871 Randall, Montgomery Co, NY
bur. Maple Ave Cemetery; Fultonville, Montgomery Co, NY
b. 1813 Onondaga, Onondaga Co, NY
m. Cornelia VAN VALKENBURGH
m. Mary Ann MARTIN
d. 1894 Randall, Montgomery Co, NY
bur. Maple Ave Cemetery; Fultonville, Montgomery Co, NY
b. 1856 Randall, Montgomery Co, NY
m. Isabel (Belle) BEVINS (d. 1897)
m. Eleanor EDWARDS
d. 1946 Binghamton, Broome Co, NY
bur. Maple Ave Cemetery; Fultonville, Montgomery Co, NY
b. 1895 Randall, Montgomery Co, NY
d. 1965 Binghamton, Broome Co, NY
WWI veteran
bur. Cavalry Cemetery; Johnson City, Broome Co, NY
I have some additional information about the family on-line, including a GED2HTML-generated hypertext family tree. If you are interested, have a look at http://www.dreamscape.com/jurista/Lounsbery/. Thanks very, very much for your help. James J. Jurista

Hi. Is anyone working on MAXIM, VAN DEUSEN, or POTTER in either Montgomery or Warren County? I have a gg-grandmother Lydia Jane (1840-1863) who was either a POTTER or a VAN DUESEN. She married Henry MAXIM who was born in Warren County about 1835. Lydia may have been a Van Deusen who married a George POTTER, and then later married Henry Maxim.
I am trying to figure out who Lydia's parents were. Lydia and Henry had a daughter, Henrietta Maxim ( b. 9 May 1860 in Glens Falls ). Thanks!

I seek information, such as a marriage or land record of my gg-grandparents, Francis and Permelia (SPAULDING) ROOT. They, accompanied by their two children, James Root and my g-grandmother Harriet Root, and a family friend, Powell SHELL, moved from Herkimer Co. to the Brooklyn, WI (Green Co.) frontier in 1847. Both Shell and the Root family received a patent deed from the federal government for forty acres. They dug a well and erected their cabins near the section line separating their two pieces of land. Francis died one year later. Permelia subsequently married John McCLARRINON and had seven more children with him. She died in 1871.
I believe that my g-grandmother Harriet Root was born in Herkimer Co., sometime before 10 October in the year 1842 (based on 1850 federal census information) and that her brother, James Root, was born in Herkimer Co. on 27 April 1841 (date found in a book entitled "History of Green County", published in 1884). Gg-grandmother Permelia's maiden surname was SPAULDING. I wonder if that family also lived in Herkimer County. While I have plenty of information on the Roots from 1847 on, I have no information on their time in Herkimer Co. (except that stated in this query). Any information you provide will be extremely appreciated. Thank you in advance. Hal Mosher
A NOTE FROM THE COORDINATOR: The journal "New York Genealogical and Biographical Record" has tombstone inscriptions for many, many Montgomery Counties cemeteries in the few volumes preceding and following Volume 58 (for the year 1927) that Linda is discussing below. This journal is NOT available through interlibrary loan as it is rare and usually in fragile condition. The journals may be used on-site at the New York City Public Library, the State Library in Albany and may be available at selected larger genealogical libraries throughout the U.S.
Most of the Montgomery burials were transcribed as found, and are not in alphabetical order. Although this makes for time-consuming searching, inscriptions in this format can often show relationships between families. As you can tell from Linda's query, these journals will often have records of very small cemeteries whose stones may no longer be in existence or are currently in unreadable condition. The journals are large and have small print, and not amenable for look-ups. Most counties did not have their cemeteries published in the journal. Since issues of NYGBR date back to the 1870s, it is best to go through them personally for information for your counties of interest. However, each volume is indexed. Thanks, Linda, for reminding me of this valuable resource for NY State research. If you know of any libraries that have this journal, please email us the location so we can post it.

Am looking for parents of Horace BLOOD. Their tombstone inscriptions from Montgomery County, NY:
I believe this Horace to be the son of Abner Blood from MA. Any help would be greatly appreciated.
The tombstone inscriptions from Montgomery Co., NY are listed in the New York Genealogical and Biographical Record. There are many books to this set. The info on Horace Blood was from Vol. 58 1927. This particular grave is located at the Charleston Baptist Church Cemetery at Riders Corners. There are many other cemeteries located in this section. There is also a map of the Florida Township, Montgomery County, N.Y. These were collected, transcribed, and contributed by Edith (Van Heusen) Becker in colloboration with Melvin W. Lethbridge.
