The Date Book of Charles Z. Brandow
of Fort Plain, NY
These births, marriages, and deaths from the Montgomery County area were transcribed from a datebook kept by my great-grandfather Charles Zoller Brandow (1872-1955). Charles was the son of Leroy J. Brandow and Louise M. Zoller; he married Sarah ("Sadie") Selwood and had a son (Leroy J.) and a daughter (Dorothy Louise). Dorothy was my maternal grandmother.
Charles' father, Leroy J. Brandow, was an undertaker based in Starkville. Charles owned the C.Z. Brandow Company grocery on Main Street in Fort Plain. His wife, Sadie Selwood, was the daughter of Richard Selwood, owner of Selwood Monuments on Canal Street, which is still in business.
Growing up in my family, the datebook was always referred to as "Pop's Book". From 1930 until his death in 1955, he religiously copied his entries from newspapers and word-of-mouth. In addition to vital statistics, there are also entries about international, national, local, and personal events. When he started keeping the book, he also wrote (at the top part of the page) things that had happened before 1930, with some dating back into the late 19th century.
I think it's interesting to notice that his handwriting, although it remained beautiful, definitely became shakier and more difficult to read as the years went by.
I'm sure there are some errors (both his and mine), but I did my best to read his handwriting and transcribe as accurately as I could. I hope you find some ancestors in Pop's Book; maybe even solve a genealogical mystery.
