RALPH C. ALTER Fort Plain-Ralph C. Alter, 67, died here yesterday after a long illness. He was born Nov. 7, 1892 in Brookman's Corners section of the Town of Minden, son of Emory and Esther Yerdon Alter. He came to Fort Plain in 1912. In partnership with Ed Sauer, he opened a barbershop in 1912. Since 1931 he has been in partnership with William Swartz in the operation of a barbershop on Canal St. He retired June 1, 1959. He married Edna Failing in Fort Plain in 1916. He was a member of the Universalist Church, and Fort Plain Lodge 433, F.& A.M. Besides his wife, he leaves two sons, Clifford and Russel [and] two grandchildren, all of Fort Plain; two brothers, Fred of Winter Park, Fla. [and] Sherman of Otselic. Thus has passed away one of the excellent of earth. Br. Belding was for many years a preacher in our denomination. His first settlement was in Gloucester, Mass. He was afterward located at Braman's Corners, Clarksville, and Fort Plain, N. Y. Some twenty years since, in consequence of physical disability, he was compelled to leave the ministry. For several years he was engaged in teaching. But although ceasing to proclaim the glad tidings of salvation to his fellow-men publicly, yet in all his walk in private life he has ever been a devout and exemplary Christian-his meek and humble deportment ever presenting to the world the excellency of that faith which was so precious to him. His funeral was attended by the writer in the Dutch Reformed Church in Port Jackson, assisted in the services by the pastor, Rev. Mr. Voorhees. Bellinger at the Age of 65 Years Fort Plain, Oct 13.-Miss Julia A. Bellinger, aged 65 years, died at the home of her brother, Theron Bellinger, in this village, yesterday forenoon. About 18 months ago Miss Bellinger sustained a slight stroke of paralysis, and although never free from the effects of this illness, she had recovered sufficiently to be about and her death was not expected. She had been at the home of Mr. and Mrs. Fred Walrath in this town of Thursday and was taken ill there. She was at once brought to her brother's home, where she gradually failed until the end. Death was due to hemorrhage of the brain. The deceased was born in this town and had always lived here. She was a daughter of the late Christian and Elvina Bellinger, the family being one of the oldest and best known in this section. She was a member of the Universalist Church and was held in high esteem and respect by a large circle of friends and acquaintances. Besides the brother mentioned, Miss Bellinger is survived by one sister, Mrs. Asa Zimmerman, who lives in this town. Schultz Agency and a former farmer, died Saturday in his home. He had been doctoring for a heart condition. He was forced to retire from farming in 1972 because of poor health. He was born in the Town of Minden, son of Lynn J. and Jennie Casler Cronkhite. He was a graduate of Fort Plain Central School. He was a fifth generation farmer on the family homestead in the Fordbush section of the town. He and his father were honored in 1968 by former Governor Nelson Rockefeller and presented with a farm plaque commemorating 100 years of continuous ownership. He was secretary-treasurer of the Farmers Insurance Co., Minden and Mohawk Valley Cooperative Fire Insurance Co. He was a member of the Universalist Church of the Messiah. He was a member of the Fort Plain Masonic Lodge and the New York State and National Holsteins Association. July 8.-Abram Devendorf, a well known resident of the town of Minden, died suddenly at 8 o'clock this morning from acute indigestion, an attack of which he suffered at 7 o'clock last evening. He was 77 years of age. Mr. Devendorf was a representative citizen. The early part of his life was spent successfully in farming. He served as postmaster of Fort Plain for 8 years under President Roosevelt. Later he was engaged in the lumber business with the Zoller Lumber Company of Fort Plain. For the past few years he had spent the summers on the home farm and winters at Hotel Grant in Fort Plain. He was a member of the Universalist Church and also of the Minden grange. He is survived by his wife, one son Irving S. Devendorf and two grandchildren, Miss Algo [sic] and Harlan of Fort Plain. July 9.-Abram Devendorf, former postmaster of Fort Plain and one of the best known residents of the western section of Montgomery county, died suddenly yesterday at his farm in the town of Minden, opposite this village, on which he was born, at the age of 77 years. He was a highly respected citizen of sterling character and for many years has been one of the foremost Republicans of the section. He has for a long time passed his summers on the family farm in Minden and his winters in Fort Plain, where he made his home at Hotel Grant. For eight years Mr. Devendorf was postmaster at Fort Plain, being appointed by President Roosevelt. Later he was with the Zoller Lumber Company. The late Mr. Devendorf was vice president of First National Bank of St. Johnsville and was a director of the Farmers' and Mechanics' Bank of Fort Plain. Mr. Devendorf is survived by his wife, a son Irving N., and two grandchildren, Olga and Harlan, of St. Johnsville. DEVOE, FORT PLAIN, DIES Former Knit Goods Manufacturer, County Treasurer Dies Fort Plain-Daniel I. Devoe, a former knit goods manufacturer of Fort Plain, died Sunday night about midnight at his home, Lydius street, aged 74 years. Mr. Devoe had not been in the best of health for some time past, but had been confined to his home for only about three weeks. Daniel I. Devoe was born January 19, 1860 in the town of Warren, Herkimer County, a son of the late Daniel A. and Maris Snell Devoe. He was educated in the old Clinton Liberal Institute of Fort Plain, graduating in 1878 and later took a business course in the Rochester Commercial College. He came to Fort Plain in 1879 and took a position as clerk in the drug store conducted by Petit & Reid, but a year later went to Canajoharie, where he engaged in the drug business with John N. Snell. Returning to Fort Plain in 1885, he became a partner with [his brother-in-law] Walter F. Shumway in the drug business in March of that year. This partnership was continued until 1893, when Mr. Devoe sold his interest. In 1893 Mr. Devoe engaged in the manufacture of knit goods in the Verdon Building, Main Street. Later the Elwood Silk Mill on Upper Canal Street was purchased and the business removed there. It was incorporated in 1902 under the name of the Fort Plain Knitting Company and the firm was dissolved several years ago, Mr. Devoe retaining the mill building. He was president and general manager of the concern, which made an excellent line of knit goods for many years. In politics Mr. Devoe was a Republican and served one term as treasurer of Montgomery County. He was always interested in public affairs of Fort Plain. He was a member of the board of trustees of the Universalist Church and at the time of his death was chairman of the board. He also was a member of Fort Plain Lodge 433, F. & A. M. and had served as master of the lodge for four years; Hiram Union Chapter 53, Royal Arch Masons; Knights Templar Commandery No. 26, Little Falls; Ziyara Temple of the Mystic Shrine, Utica; Mohawk Valley Lodge [??], Knights of Pythias, and Fort Plain Club. [On] May 24, 1882 he was married to Agnes Shumway, who died January 8, 1915. On June 1, 1916 Mr. Devoe married Lillian A. Failing, daughter of the late Mr. and Mrs. Adam L. Failing, who survives together with one daughter by his first marriage, Ethel, wife of E. Mercer Weiskotten of Utica; two sisters, Mrs. Frank W. Bauder, Fort Plain and Mrs. Charlotte Zoller, West Union, Iowa. The funeral arrangements have not yet been made, but services will probably be held Wednesday. She was born Sept. 26, 1909, in the town of Ephrata, daughter of Adam and May Grace Swartz. Until a year ago she was employed by the Beech-Nut Packing Co., Canajoharie. She attended the Universalist Church and was a member of its choir. Surviving besides her husband, Roy Lettis, are a son, (name omitted for privacy), in the U.S. Army; her father, Adam Swartz, Fort Plain; three brothers, Harold and Strayer, both of Fort Plain, and Durwood, U.S. Navy on Guam; two sisters, Mrs. Alfred Arnold and Mrs. Stanley Eckler, both of Fort Plain. She was born Oct. 4, 1877, in Nelliston, daughter of John and Mary Sterling Lasher, and was a lifelong resident of this village. She was married in 1900, and her husband died Oct. 1, 1937. Mrs. Lord attended the Fort Plain Universalist Church of the Messiah. Surviving are a daughter, Mrs. Harold Van Vechten; a son, Edwin; a brother, Charles Lasher; two sisters, Mrs. Ada Temple and Miss Lilah Lasher; two grandsons, a granddaughter and two great-grandchildren, all of Nelliston. Miller- The death of Mrs. Jeanette MacKenzie Miller, widow of Jonas Miller, occurred at the home of her son, Irvin Miller, at Palatine Church yesterday afternoon after an illness of about two years. Mrs. Miller was born at Salisbury, Herkimer county, August 25, 1823, but practically all of her life was spent in the town of Minden and this vicinity. She was widely known and beloved by all with whom she was acquainted. Mrs. Miller was a member of the Universalist church in the town of Minden and its auxiliaries. She is survived by one daughter Mrs. Otto Fox of San Diego, Cal., and two sons, Irvin Miller of Palatine Church [and] Alton Miller of Fordsbush. The body was removed from the home of Mr. Irvin Miller last night, in charge of funeral director H. S. Van Antwerp, to the Miller home at Fordsbush, where the funeral will be held on Friday afternoon at 2 o'clock with the Rev. Herbert F. Pardee, died Dec. 24, 1957, at her home on Willett St. after a long illness. She was born Oct. 14, 1875, in Newark, N. Y., daughter of Horace and Harriett J. Clark Sidney. Mrs. Pardee was a former teacher at Newark and Fonda high schools and was interested in civic affairs. She was affiliated with the Parent-Teacher Association and for 10 years was president of the Fort Plain Study Class. For four years she was head of the March of Dimes drive here. Roof, 84, died June 15, 1950 in the Ambridge Nursing Home, where she had been a patient for five weeks. She was married to Mr. Snyder in 1912 and he died in 1949. The couple resided in the Brookman's Corners section of the Town of Minden until 1945 when they came to Fort Plain. Mr. Sponable, a former Syracusan, moved to the Fort Plain area in 1939 and since that time had operated a grill in the Fort Plain and Nelliston area. He married Margaret Wood of Fort Plain in 1922. Steer of this village died yesterday afternoon at a hospital in Utica following an illness of several weeks. Mrs. Steer had been in poor health for a long time and was recently taken to Utica, where she underwent an operation in hopes of bettering her condition. She gradually failed until the end came yesterday afternoon at about 3:30 o'clock. The deceased was born at Seneca Falls and came to Fort Plain several years ago, and since locating here has made a host of friends who will sincerely regret her death. She was a member of the Universalist Church and always took an interest in the work of that organization. Besides her husband she is survived by one daughter, Miss Harriett Steer of this village; two sisters, Mrs. B. E. Shields of Pine Bluff, Ark. and Miss Frances Short of Chicago, Ill.; also three brothers, Fred Short of Springfield, Mo., Edward Short of Topeka, Kan., and Harry Short of Kansas City. He attended the Universalist Church in Springfield Center where, for many years, he owned and operated a hotel. He came to Canajpharie 19 years ago. His daughter is the only immediate survivor. NELLISTON MAN DEAD IN BED Injuries Received by Charles Smith a Few Days Ago Proved Fatal Fort Plain, March 23.- Charles Smith, a native of the village of Nelliston, was found dead in bed at his home in that village this morning. Mr. Smith, white at work a few days ago, fell and injured his side quite severely. Two ribs were fractured. It was not thought that he was seriously injured. He is a brother of John Smith of this village and was about 46/48(?) years of age.
MRS. CHARLES HINAMAN Her Death Occurred at Home in Nelliston. Fort Plain, Dec. 7.- Mrs. Maria Ehle Hinaman, relict of the late Charles Hinaman, died at her home in Nelliston yesterday at the advanced age of 84 years. The deceased is survived by one daughter, Mrs. Charles Luft of Nelliston. The funeral will be held from her late home Friday afternoon at 2 p. m., the Rev. Thomas J. Farmer of Tufts College officiating.
Fort Plain, Aug. 13- M. W. Mowrey Dead M. W. Mowrey, after an illness of several weeks with typhoid fever, died at his home in Wagner's Hollow yesterday, aged 48 years. The deceased had been for many years an extensive manufacturer of paper board, and as a business man and citizen he was highly thought of and esteemed. He was an honored member of the local lodge of Knights of Pythias, under the auspices of which the funeral will be held from his late home Friday at 1 o'clock. The remains will be brought to Fort Plain for burial and will be met at Nelliston by Mohawk Valley Lodge, K. of P., who will escort the body to the cemetery.
FORT PLAIN. AGED RESIDENTS HAVE PASSED AWAY Death of Mrs. William Herdman and Miss Margaret Dillenbeck. Fort Plain, Aug. 15.- The death of Mrs. William Herdman, aged 73/78(?) years, which occurred at her home in this village yesterday morning, taken away from loving relatives and friends a lady highly respected. She was a prominent member of the M. E. Church of Fort Plain, and in many respects in her religion very enthusiastic and earnest. She is survived by her husband. The funeral will take place from the Methodist Church Sunday at 10:30 a.m. and will be conducted by the Rev. J. C. Russum, her pastor. The remains will be placed in the Fort Plain Cemetery. Mrs. Margaret Dillenbeck. The death of Miss Margaret Dillenbeck, a respected citizen of Fort Plain for nearly a life time, occurred at her home in Fort Plain yesterday, after a brief illness, aged 81 years. The deceased is survived by one brother, Alexander. The funeral was held from the house to-day at 2 o'clock, the Rev. A. S. Yantes of the Universalist Church officiating.

Springfield. Arthur Mallette received the sad sad news of the death of his uncle, Dayton Mallette, at Buel, N. Y. His death was caused by a fall while at work. Mr. and Mrs. Ben Tietgen and Arthur Mallette attended the funeral of their uncle, Dayton Mallette, at Ames, on Sunday afternoon.
St. Johnsville, Feb. 22 Mrs. Katherine Groff Storms, widow of the late Daniel J. Storms, died at her home on West Main street yesterday morning of heart failure resulting from pneumonia. Mrs. Storms who was almost a life long resident of St. Johnsville, was born at Crum Creek and was __ years of age. She was a devout member of the Methodist-Episcopal Church of St. Johnsville. Mrs. Storms is survived by two sons, Fred D. of St. Johnsville and Arthur J. of Rockford, Ill.; also three daughters, Mrs. M. L. Lewis of Nyack, Mrs. J. M. Bently of Owasso, Mich., and Miss Ella Storms of St. Johnsville. The funeral will be held from her late residence on Wednesday at 1:30 p.m., the REv. W. A. Haven officiating.
Canajoharie - James Smith, 19, of Palatine Bridge, was found hanging from a barn rafter yesterday.
Frank Ellithorp. Frank Ellithorp, who boarded at the home of Frank Schrader on South avenue, died at the Hanemann (sic) Hospital in Rochester Thursday, aged thirty-seven years. Mr. Ellithorp was taken with influenza the previous Friday, and on Wednesday was taken to the hospital, as the disease had developed into pneumonia. He had been employed at the Douglas Packing Company's factory, for the past ten years. His home before coming to Fairport, was at Canajoharie. Near surviving relatives are his mother, Mrs. Sarah J. Ellithorp; sister, Oriole Ellithorp, and a brother, Wilmer Ellithorp, all of Palatine Bridge; and a brother, Perlia B. Ellithorp of Rochester. Burial was from the family home Palatine Bridge, Saturday.
John Frederick's Suicide. Brockett's Bridge, April 15.- John Frederick, a native of Germany, and an old resident of the town of Oppenheim, Fulton county, was buried yesterday. He committed suicide at his residence, about three miles from this village, Friday night, by taking a dose of rat poison. Wednesday he came down here and went into the store of General Spofford and wanted to purchase a revolver, but J. C. Spofford, who was then waiting on the customers, refused to sell it to him, as he thought he was hardly in his right mind. He then proceeded in the direction of Little Falls, where it is supposed he procured the poison, which he took on some bread and butter in the presence of his wife, and died shortly afterwards. This was his second attempt.
Canajoharie, Nov. 7.- William A. Seeber, aged 72 years, a very old resident of this town, died Monday. He was a man honored and respected by all. Morcan/Morgan L. Grey, about thirty years ago one of our most enterprising merchants, died in New York, on Thursday, at the ripe old age of about 64. Lutton, the man who lost a leg at the fire in Green's mills, Amsterdam, died from the effects of the injuries.
Fonda, Jan. 11 John Young, aged 68, the "original wringer man," died suddenly in his stable of heart disease, at his home near Amsterdam, Friday. He was the inventor of the elastic rolls used in washing and wringing machines, from which fortunes have been made, but Young only a small sum out of his invention.
