In the 1810 census of Charlestown, Montgomery Co., James STEPHENSON, age 16-26, was living with wife age 16-26 and son under 10. Living nearby were Cornelius Stephenson, age 26-45, wife age 16-26, a male 10-16, and adult female over 45 years of age. This James Stephenson may be the same man living with his wife, possibly Hannah, and 5 children in Butternuts Twp, Otsego Co. in 1820. Any information on Steph(v)ensons in Montgomery Co. greatly appreciated.

In 1821-22 James PADGETT and Sarah VAN BUREN were in Montgomery County, NY, probably near Amsterdam, when their daughter, Elizabeth was born about 1821(?). Elizabeth married Conrad LINGENFELTER, b. 1816, of same county in 1839 and moved to Jefferson Co. Sarah VAN BUREN PADGETT may have died after the birth of a son, James, in 1836. James, Sr. moved to Oxford, Chenango Co., about 1842. Can anyone help me identify the parentage of Sarah VAN BUREN and James PADGETT. Any info on the Padgett's of Montgomery County will be gladly received. I will share my 1855 census tracking in Chenango County. Thank you. Shirley Farone.

LINGENFELTER - I'm researching the Michael LINGENFELTER family who lived in Montgomery County circa 1774. At least two brothers, Michael and Johannes, purchased 800 acres in Montgomery County, NY sometime before the Rev. War. They each raised large families in the area. I am seeking more info. about the FIKE(s) families that were in Hermiker and Montgomery Counties, NY, in 1790; they were listed in the census. Specifically, we have a George FIKES born 1778 in S.C. and I have no idea where the family came from before this. Was there anyone from this NY FIKES family that moved south? Maybe an Elisha or Tirey? Thanks. Ellen Bentley, Bangor, Maine.

In the late-1700's, Johann Christian SCHELL and family lived four miles north of Herkimer in a settlement called (at the time) Schell's Bush. I have visited Herkimer and the (present day) Schell's Bush Road but did not have time to research the location of where the Schell's farm house was situated. As you might guess, I am a descendant of the Schell family.

BENNETT/ HARRIS/ RICHARDSON/ THOMPSON/ THOMAS/ LANE : Pursuing all descendants of these families across NY state and those of whom migrated to the "Wabash Country," in 1816. Descendants of:

Dr. John Bennett, ca. 1750 to 1790, Phila Co PA; Dauphin Co PA; Cayuga Co, NY. Sons and daus intermarried with Richardson and Harris families.

James Bennett m. Sarah Richardson 16 Apr 1792 Herkimer Co, NY.; Wm. Plunkett Bennett m. Elizabeth Harris Vance (Cayuga? Seneca?); Joseph Richardson m. Mary Bennett.

Most of this comes from a "History of a branch of the Richardson Family," by David Thomas ca. 1860.

Joseph Richardson and several of his brothers and families migrated to IL.

Wm P and George Bennett also moved their families to IL. There are Harris familes but have no connection to the NY clans. Same is true of the Thomases and Thompsons. There are however many NY state connections here and I hope to connect with other researchers of these early Central NY founding families. They all moved sometime after 1782 to the present counties of Cayuga and Seneca where they operated mills and ferries across the lake, later constructing the first bridge across the lake. Have much data on most of these families and am willing to share what I have.

Mc GREGOR, Gregor and his wife Mary MENZIE. Gregor was possibly born in Auchmore, Scotland near Killin in 1769. He had one sister Janet born 1773. Their parent's were possibly Duncan Mc Gregor and Janet Mc FARLANE, married in Blair, Atholl (this I have from the I.G.I.). Gregor left Scotland in 1805 and was recorded in New Hampsire and Vermont and then in New York. I have the pages from the family bible made in Cooperstown, Montgomery County. In it is written the marriage date of Gregor and Mary Menzie, June 14th 1814, and two children born to them: Duncan 1815 and John 1816. Then they came into Canada and settled in Aldborough Twp Elgin County near Rodney Ontario. Gregor's best friend was Thomas Ford. I have all facts down to now but need information for when they were in the U.S. They owned farms either in New York or Vermont I think. Colonel Talbot brought them over with him from a place maybe called Caledonia. Came over with Finlay Mc DIRAMID, John Menzie (Mary's father) and James Mc KINLAY. Gregor is my ggg-grandfather. I'm willing to share all this when it is put to-gether. Thanking you in advance, Annie of "Gregor" search.

Seeking parents of David C. BETTS, born 1803. Family tradition says he was born in Amsterdam, NY but I have found no trace. Since this area was heavily settled by Palatines, could name be spelled differently?. That is the only spelling the family has seen. He lived in Indian Territory (OK) from about 1844-70. He then disappeared from the records in OK. Some say he returned to NY. Also seeking info on any BETTS family who lived in Montgomery and Fulton Counties around 1800, as well as any BETTS gravesites in these counties. Any assistance very gratefully appreciated. Thank you.

Have been looking in Oneida for my Charles ROBINSON, b. 1798, but since Oneida was formed from Herkimer in 1798, perhaps Herkimer will be a more fruitful place. Charles and wife Polly (also b. 1797, Oneida) and children born there moved to Cooperstown between 1855-8 (perhaps the children moved first, Charles and Polly later). I know my great-grandfather Francis was born Sauquoit, Paris Township in 1827, so probably the others were born there also. I think there must be a connection between this family and Nathan Robinson who settled with others in the vicinity of Sauquoit in 1791. TIA!

James S. WELLS, was born Oct 9, 1793 in New York State, He married Sarah or Sally VAN BUREN on May 15, 1817 in Nelson, Madison County NY OR in Mayfield, Montgomery County, NY. Sarah (Sally) was born March 28, 1801 to William Van Buren and Phoebe HUFF/ HAFF/ HOFF. Not much is known about James S. Wells, not even the county in which he lived and he may have gone back and forth. Sally's father William Van Buren is "presumed" to have been the son of Harmon Van Buren.

While William is listed in a birth register, he does not get a mention in his father's will. His brother, Peter, is also not mentioned. Either a page was missing from the will or these two brothers feuded with the step mother or they were given sufficient land before the will was written. I wondered if anyone was researching in the Montgomery County Courthouse and could perhaps find out more about James S. Wells and his wife and their connection to Harmon Van Buren. Your help and expertise will be most appreciated. Vivian in Seattle.
