Surnames beginning with letters "Co" on....

Prof. K. Edward Lay Sun Jan 5 1997
My wife's 6th GGF Conrad CODER, Sr., came to America from DEU on 16 Sep 1751 and died in 1793 in Northampton Co, PA. I have his children as Conrad Jr., Catharine, Elizabeth, Catharine (Mrs. Martin CONRAD), and Agatha (Mrs. Philip LESSIG).

My wife then descends from Conrad, Jr's, daughter Anna Maria CODER (c. 1774 - 1825 ), who married Johan Georg HOHENSCHILDT, Jr. (1772 - 1810 ) Montgomery Co, NY, son of Johan Georg HOHENSCHILDT (1742 - 1822 ) and Anna Elizabetha WAGNER (c.1750 - 1825 ), daughter of LTC Johann Peter WAGNER, Deputy Commander of Palatine Regt. who fought before Saratoga against the British in the Revolutionary War, and who married a DOCKSTADER.

She then descends from John S. HOHENSCHILT (1795 - 1859 ) and Susannah HARTMAN (1799 -1864 ), of Westmoreland Co, PA, daughter of John HURTMAN, b. DEU d. 1827, and Julianna SPINDLER, b. 1770. Their son George HOHENSHELL (1819 - 1846 ), married Mary SMUTZ (1823-1901 ), whose children became educators at college and secondary level and authored several publications. Mary's father was David SMUTZ (1786 - 1852 )and her grandparents were Abraham SCHMUTZ d. c 1784 and Mary ROHRER, who came to America from DEU on 21 Sep 1742.

Some of this family are listed in Richard Glenn Huffman's "The Genealogy of . . . Conrad KODER", 1985.

COFFIN, Ina May: Ina May Coffin was born abt. 1882. When she was about 23 she lived in Little Falls, Herkimer county, NY. On 19 May 1905 she married Sidney M. Van ALLEN. They both were from Little Falls, but were married at the Herkimer Baptist Church. I'm looking for anything about Ina May Coffin. That marriage lasted about two years and I'd like to know if there were any children from this union. In December 1907 Sidney Van Allen married my grandmother. No one in my family knew about this marriage until I started my genealogy research in the spring of 1996. The 1905 NYS census shows them residing in Little Falls, and Sidney was a Little Falls fireman. Paul Van Allen. New Hartford, NY.

Abraham CONOVER married Nelly MALOTTE in Fonda in 1780. Their son, William COVENHOVEN (?) married Susan SCHULER in Charleston, Montgomery Co. in 1816 (Note: I don't understand the reversion back to the earlier Covenhoven version of this surname and have some doubt about it.) Their son was Gaylor C. Conover, b. Dec 25, 1819 in Glen. He later married Jane Eliza FRANK in Root, Montgomery Co.; died in Low Moor, Iowa, 1925. Their son, William Clinton Conover, b. Montgomery Co., 1856, lived in Low Moor, Iowa, m. Carrie HUTSON in 1880, d. 1925 . Their son, William Claude Conover, b. Low Moor, IA, Mar 30, 1892 was my grandfather. He m. Ella M. SECOR in Fond du Lac, WI, Nov 15, 1911. So that's how I am connected to the Montgomery Co. Conovers.

Calvin WOODARD aka Calvin WOODERT was baptized June 13, 1819, St Paul's Lutheran Church, Minden, Montgomery Co. He m. Mary B. SMITH in Ionia, MI , in 1840. Their dau, Frances Louisa Woodard m. John E. LOWE in Ionia, April 24, 1870. Their dau, Marian M. Lowe m. Charles Joseph ROSE in Mpls, 1902. There you have it. I have two links to your lovely Montgomery County at the same generation!! I know it is lovely because my wife and I visited there very briefly last September, visited Fultonville, Glen, Johnstown, etc.

These Conovers are an ubiquitous lot. They first arrived in the Americas in 1625, were part of the handful of Dutch folks who founded New Amsterdam. The head of the line in America was Wolfert Van KOUWENHOVEN. He was my 9th great-grandfather. My 5th ggf was Cornelius Conover who died in Montgomery Co. 1804. I notice there is a Cornelius Conover in the 1869 Charleston directory. I sure would like to be able to figure out how all these Conovers link together.

I am descended from an Eliza M. CORNUE of Montgomery County who married Henry F. WES(T)COT(T) in Montgomery Co. in 1848. They were listed in the 1855 state census with daughter Alice Adelaide, my g-grandmother. Would like to find parents of both Eliza and Henry. His obituary suggests his birth was in Syracuse, but nothing has matched so far. She was possibly of the Dutch Reformed church, but the marriage was in the Lutheran Reformed Church.

CRONEY/YOUNG - Herkimer County: I have some sketchy family history to share but am also looking for help. My mother was born in Stark, NY 1927 along with 2 brothers, one older and one younger: Henry Richard Croney, Jr b. 1925; Etta (Ettie) Letto Young or Croney b. 1927; Joseph Young or Croney b. 1929. Not sure of marriage certificate of parents but court records found in my mother's possession say they were married in 1924??

In 1930 these 3 children were removed from their home by Department of Public Welfare Court House Herkimer, NY. An Oct 9 1953 a letter to my mother states "there is no history and no information at all. As this was a case in 1930, 23 years ago, and we have no leads to help. There are notes however that in 1939 there was an attempt by someone to find out more about the case, no results." However there are court records stating the removal of these children. The letter further states "after Joseph was placed in the institution he died of pneumonia which followed an attack of whooping cough. There is a record that Henry Richard was boarded in a family in the neighborhood. Our card mentions that the family came from the village of Starkville."

My mother was eventually placed in State Charities Aid Assoc. NY and then adopted. Sometime in 1953 she went to Herkimer to visit the courthouse and I have notes she jotted down, for example: Ms. XXX RIPPLE, Little Falls, Alexandria St; Mr. XXX HOLK, Jordanville; and info of her dad in Middletown Inst. It hints that Ms. Ripple may have been a relative as she states that they all looked like herself. She also states that paperwork at the courthouse stated that Hattie Young mother, after 1930, brought a small baby girl to Public Welfare in Herkimer and requested they place her as they did the others. We later found out that the oldest boy spent his childhood with his dad "working the farm" - Sweetclover Farms. We found him 2 years ago living in Fla. What I need to know is - does Herkimer County Court House still exist? Are records available? We would like to find this female child and any other siblings if possible.
