11/28/99 - New information courtesy of researcher Chuck Rose. Chuck's note points out why old readings can't be taken at face value!

Referring to your listing of Isaac Conover in the Conover Cemetery in Charleston: "The compilers said that older residents claimed he is buried here; Isaac Conover was at the Battle of Oriskany".

Isaac Conover was at the Battle of Oriskany along with his four brothers and his father Cornelius. Isaac was the twin brother of Abraham Conover, one of the other brothers at Oriskany, and my 4th great grandfather. The family name back then was not Conover, it was Covenhoven. Isaac Covenhoven/Conover who died Sept 20, 1845, is buried at Halls Burial Lot in Glen, which probably explains why there isn't a stone for him in the Conover Cemetery. Isaac's sister Jannetje Covenhoven was married to William Hall but according to the cemetery listing for Halls Burial Lot in Glen, neither Jannetje or William Hall are buried at that place. Also in the Conover cemetery is listed Peter J. Conover, d 3/13/1845, age 61-4-15. The same age is given for his father Ellender who d 8-29-1959. This is an obvious error. Elender's age at death is given correctly. If Peter J. Is truly the son of Ellender and Sarah (Baird) he can't be the same age as the father and have died some 14 years earlier at the age listed. Ellender Conover was he son of Abraham and Isaac's nephew. The Conover version of the family name generally came into use between 1800 and 1850. I have Rev War pension files for both Abraham and Isaac in which they both signed, in September,1832, using the surname Covenhoven. Sincerely Chuck Rose
