8/15/10 Amsterdam Evening Recorder, March 12, 1904, page 2 SAD ROMANCE OF FONDA GIRL. Married on Monday and Died on Thursday. ACCIDENT THE CAUSE. Beautiful Norma R. Hyde-Wilson, a Native of the County Seat, Fell on Icy Pavement and Succumbs to Injuries - Nuptials Planned for Next Summer Performed Three Days Before Her Death. WILSON-HYDE - At New York city, by the Rev. Arthur Howard, on Monday, March 7, 1904, James A. Wilson, Jr. and Norma R. Hyde. WILSON - At New York city, Thursday, March 10, 1904, Norma R. Hyde, wife of James A. Wilson, Jr. Funeral at Fonda, N.Y., Saturday afternoon. The simultaneous announcement of the marriage an death of Miss Norma R. Hyde, comes as a great shock to her host of friends in Fonda and Albany. Back of the announcement is a romance that appeals to the tenderest feelings of those who knew her and her widowed husband. Miss Hyde went to Albany about three years ago from Fonda, her native village, and took a position in the Boston store on North Pearl street. She was a very beautiful girl, tall, graceful and charming. Her agreeable manners and cheerful disposition soon won friends and her popularity as a sales-lady increased daily. She subsequently went to work at Richard Healy & Co's., at Albany where she made many fast friends. During her residence in Albany she made the acquaintance of James A. Wilson, jr., son of James A. Wilson, member of the well known firm of Wilson, Lansing & Co., wholesale grocers. This acquaintanceship progressed from friendship into love and the young couple became formally engaged about a year ago. Young Wilson has a lucrative and responsible position in New York. Some months ago Miss Hyde was offered and accepted a position with a leading dry goods house in the metropolis and resided there up to the time of her death. A short time ago Miss Hyde, while accompanying her fiance to Jersey City on a pleasure excursion, slipped and fell on the icy pavement, injuring herself so badly that she became seriously ill. The young couple were to have been married this summer, but on Monday Miss Hyde's illness took a very serious turn, and it was decided to have the wedding take place at once. Miss Hyde was not then confined to her bed, but her condition was precarious. The marriage was solemnized in the young woman's apartments and the officiating clergyman was the Rev. Arthur Howard. The young wife passed away three days later. The orange blossoms of nuptial joy scarcely began to droop before the lilies of sorrow took their place. Death had been unkind to the young wife. A few years ago she lost her father and not long after her loving mother. Mrs. Catherine Hyde followed him to the grave. The orphaned girl suffered another bereavement some five weeks ago, when her grandmother passed away. While in the full flush of her young womanhood, with her lover at her side and joy in her heart, the sudden accident came which had such a tragic ending. Everyone who knew her speak in the highest terms of her beautiful disposition and her many excellent attributes of chareter (sic). Mrs. Wilson was a niece of Frederick and Isaac Moore of the town of Mohawk and her funeral was held at their home today, the remains having arrived in Fonda from New York Friday evening. The officiating clergyman was Rev. H. W. P. Allen of the M. E. Church, assisted by Rev. O.J. Hogan of St. John's Reformed Church and Rev. I. B. Van Valkenburg, the latter addressing the Masonic fraternity in a feeling manner. The singing was in charge of a Masonic male quartette consisting of E. Knight, A. Turnbull, W. A. Van Deusen and J. S. Lepper. The lodge was escorted by the village band. The house was crowded and many remained away not form lack of respect for the deceased or sympathy with the survivors, but because of the fact that the room was two scant to accommodate all who wished to show their respect for their departed fellow citizen. The floral offerings were tasteful and elegant. The remains were placed in the cemetery vault preparatory to interment.
