More Small Cemeteries

Town of Florida
Montgomery County, New York

Can anyone confirm the location of the small cemeteries listed below and if they are still in existence? These lists were collected in the early 1920s by Edith (Van Heusen) Becker and Melvin W. Lethbridge. The cemeteries were located in the Town of Florida, in the eastern part of Montgomery County.

GRAVEYARDS WITH NO STONES
NOTES MADE BY MELVIN W. LETHBRIDGE

In the 19th century there was a small family cemetery on every other road in Montgomery County. Most of them didn't survive or their markers, if any, disappeared years ago. Melvin Lethbridge went all over the county in the early 1920s, talking to local residents, transcribing all cemeteries he could find. Below are notes about several Florida cemeteries known to 1920s residents for which there were no surviving markers to indicate who was buried in them. This was the same case with other towns that Lethbridge searched - he found there were more graveyards, some of them sizeable, without stones than with stones. A realistic aside to new researchers - the likelihood of determining burial location of most 18th and early 19th century county residents is miniscule. Farm locations mentioned are in reference to property owners in the 1920s. The site coordinator has no further information about these cemeteries or persons buried in them. Researchers need to read through deeds at the Montgomery County Courthouse or refer to old maps to try to determine farm location.

MARTINUS KLINE GRAVEYARD, DIEVENDORF FARM ON BANK OF SCHOHARIE CREEK

PETTINGILL GRAVEYARD ON LOHMYER FARM, YANKEE HILL
This was where Jacob Pettingill settled and established a cemetery, but all trace is gone. Not buried in for past 90 years (i.e. since the 1830s).

SALTZ GRAVEYARD OF JOHN H. VOORHEES FARM NEAR MILL POINT BRIDGE
This farm was settled on about 1750 by Francis Saltz. Cemetery was in orchard back of house toward bluff and between barn and pond. Francis Saltz, wife and others buried there. Cemetery now disappeared.

Dear Lisa,

Our family resides on ____ Rd, in the Town of Florida. My husband's family have lived there all their lives. They've known about a small cemetary on their property for years. Just recently my sister-in-law has decided to spruce up the small cemetary. That's how I became interested in it.

She cut down overgrown bushes and weeds. She ended up getting poison oak/ivy because of this. The cemetary looks great since Ruth cleaned it all up. She put a small white picket fence around it and decorated it with flowers. There is one large headstone and several small unidentifiable stones. All headstones are intact, standing upright. The only recognizable stone reads Elisabeth Rowland, wife of Rowland B, died 1852 at age 22 years 3 months.

I've been trying to locate information on Elisabeth. I came across the Town of Florida website and looked into the small cemetery section to find info on this cemetery. It also said to contact someone if anyone can confirm the location of these small cemeteries.

Please let me know if you would like any additional information and also if you have any information regarding this family/cemetery, we would love to learn more about her.

Thanks for your help,
Tammy Hirschfeld

Dear Lisa,

We're so glad you have more information for us. My sister-in-law went to the gravestone with paper and pencil and the name VUNCK did appear. Although, you can't see it by looking at it. This is what Ruth (my sister-in-law) etched out:

Elisabeth J Rowland wife of Rowland Vunck d. 7/25/1852

There is also a small headstone to her left that just has intitials on it "DJV." We were wondering if that could've been a child perhaps? Maybe she died during childbirth? We are so intrigued by this woman. We wish we could find out more.

Anyway, the cemetary is located in the backyard of 635 Queen Anne Road. It's a lovely site, just above the Mohawk River. I can imagine Mr. Rowland Vunck buried her there because it was a pretty location. The property is owned by _____ [Site Coordinators' Note: for privacy considerations, we're omitting information provided regarding current owners, who are related to Tammy. Please email Tammy directly for contact information if you need to visit this cemetery.]

We were wondering if there was a way to reburbish the headstones. Is there someone with the County that does that?

Thanks for all your help and we're happy to hear that someone is as excitedabout this as we are.

Tammy and I have been exploring Elisabeth's heritage, from what I can find online. It appears that she might be the daughter of David and Catherine Rowland of the town of Florida. David's buried in Green Hill cemetery in Amsterdam. There was another Rowland family of Marquis/Palmer Rowland (Marquis P. in 1840, Palmer in later census records) in the town of Florida, and he is also buried in Green Hill cemetery. Can't pin her down definitely to David Rowland as she is already the wife of Rowland Vunck in the 1850 census, but as David has a "missing" daughter of the right approximate age in the 1850 census and all children of Marquis/Palmer are accounted for in the 1850 census, David appears to be the right father. David is living in Glen in 1850, but is in Florida in 1840 and back again in 1860.

new 4/25/05    The Voorhus Cemetery is located on Shellstone Road in the Town of Florida. The current owner of the property upon which it is located is Mr. John Eisler. The previous owners were Michael and Anne Rusnica. Anne showed me the grave of Lovina Hills many years ago. I saw her gravestone. It was lying down. This stone was professionally made by a stonecutter in Schenectady. The site was at that time overgrown with raspberry bushes, but in cleaning the area around Lovina's grave I noted other mounds where fieldstone type markers had been placed. All of these were oriented around a very old cherry tree. I'm sure Mr. Eisler would allow you to see the site. I hope this helps! Sincerely, Joe Inglese

GREAT INFO sent to us from Susan Kenyon back in April! We'll be posting some photos soon! From here on forth, this is Susan talking:

There are over 100 burials in this cemetery, on J. Agre farm, per "The Memorial Census for Duanesburg, New York", by Clarence Foote, pg 100 #42.

John Frydendall (FREDENDALL), his wife and son are buried at Frydendall Cem. He is the father of Lawrence Frydendall.

The Fredendall family lived in the towns of Duanesburgh and Florida:

1820 NY Town of Duanesburg, Schenectady Co., pg 145, FRADENDOL, John
1830 NY Town of Duanesburg, Schenectady Co., pg 241, FREDENDELL, John
1850 NY Town of Florida, Montgomery Co., FRITENDELL,Lawrence
1855 NY Town of Florida, Montgomery Co., Family #9, FRYDENDALL, Lawrence
1860 NY Town of Florida, Montgomery Co., FRYDENDOL, Laurence, #446
1865 NY Town of Florida, Montgomery Co., FRITENDAL, Lawrence, #44

Two sons served in the Civil War from the Town of Florida, NY, enlisting in 1862 in D Co. 115th Inf Reg. NY. Lawrence and family moved to Batavia, Kane Co., IL after the Civil War, where his brother Daniel had moved prior to the War.

My visit to the area in August 1998:

When my husband and I got out to take photos and 'weed' our way thru the underbush, berry bushes, and 5 ft. tall weeds - some folks call them wild flowers - elderly Mr. James Bond came across the Road. Mr. Bond is the guardian who keeps the kids and vandals out.

Mr. Bond owns the surrounding properties and I believe the Cemetery is part of his deed. It is badly overgrown and lies directly across the street from his home (immaculate farm). The cemetery is surrounded by a 2-3 foot high field stone enclosure, and appears to be in 2 different sections. I do have a photo of weeds {& some stones} you could post - maybe someone would decide to stop over and read some stones in the spring before they grow back.

Many stones, leaning, fallen, broken, buried...etc. Lots of bones in this cemetery...ground is soft and sinking... may be too unnerving for some folks to walk around in and document.

The USGS mapping service shows the Batter St. and Frydendall Cem. close to one another...424911N 0741048W & 0741127W, at the intersection of Hwy. 30 & Mariaville-Montgomery Co. Line Rd 159. The intersection is about 10 miles North of the town of Duanesburg, 4 miles west of Mariaville, and about a half mile across the road is Montgomery County.

It was listed as 'Flydendall' and I asked them to change it a couple of years ago, however, it should really read Fredendall.
